WORKSHOP, Stockholm Sweden: Enabling and barring factors for early career female geographers: how do they navigate the system?

Workshop Context:

Studies looking at the career trajectories of women within the field of geography have been conducted in Spain (Garcia Ramon and Pujol i Estranges 2004; Garcia Ramon, Ortiz, Pujol n.d.) and in the UK (Maddrell in press; Shaw 2012; Crang 2003; Mahtani 2004). The status of women’s long-term careers in academia arise in the context of neoliberalization of the academia where productivity requirements have become tougher and short-term employment is the norm (Crang 2007; Archer 2008; Klocker and Drozdzewski 2012; Mott and Roberts 2014; Hawkins et al., 2014).

Combined with caring responsibilities Rafnsdóttir and Heijstra2013) and masculine departmental cultures, how are new female doctors in geography and the related social sciences influenced by these ongoing changes? How do they reconcile family and career?

This two hour workshop will gather early career female geographers and social scientists. Together we will explore how life course trajectories have impacted careers, work environments and personal lives.

We warmly invite women in the early stages of their academic career: PhD Candidates, New doctors and those who became doctors within the last 10 years.

The workshop will generate data and ideas for an ongoing project on career trajectories for female researchers. A report from the results will be publicly available and submitted to Vitterhetsakademien.
