Om föreläsningen

Throughout the twentieth century, evolutionary biologists included the processes of reproduction and adaptation as central to their field. Yet not until after the Second World War did scientists begin to recognize homosexuality as “normal” in humans and explore its evolutionary origins. The combined research of psychobiologists during this era demonstrated the widespread existence of same-sex sexual behaviors in the animals they studied. But what did they mean when they identified such behaviors as “homosexual” in animals? And what lessons did they think could be drawn from their studies for understanding human sexuality?

This talk explores changing answers to these questions, with particular attention to the shift from psychology to biology as the proving ground of normative gender and sexuality in the late-1960s and early-1970s. Counterintuitively, the politics of these professional debates over the evolution of sexuality aligned to make it difficult for advocates for LGBT rights to mobilize evolutionary accounts of homosexuality.
