Low Power to the People? DIY and the Politics of Tinkering for Social Change

Christina Dunbar-Hester currently teaches in Journalism & Media Studies at Rutgers University, where she is also an affiliated faculty member in Women’s & Gender Studies. She will join the Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism at the University of Southern California as a faculty member in 2016.

She holds a Ph.D. in Science & Technology Studies from Cornell University. Her book Low Power to the People, a study of FM radio activism in the U.S., was published in 2014 by MIT Press. Her writing on the intersection of technical practice and political engagement has appeared in numerous scholarly journals including Social Studies of Science, Public Culture, and New Media & Society. She is currently researching "diversity" initiatives in tech projects.
